NURS 201 - Level IV: Complex Care

5 Credits
This advanced course continues to examine health and illness across the lifespan with focus on normal and abnormal pathophysiological alterations. Students will build on clinical judgement, informatics, and quality improvement with focus on priority nursing actions in delivering person-centered care. The course will also focus on  pharmacological concepts and the use of medications in the role of a nurse for advanced acute illnesses. Intravenous fluid, including parenteral nutrition and advanced medication administration practices with complex, multistep numerical calculations for rates of administration and titration medications are explored. Common medication classifications and considerations related to the concepts of this course in addition to previous concepts such as acid/base balance, and hemostasis are examined.

Examine the use of medications in acute care and medical emergencies.

Identify and classify medications used in the care of individuals experiencing acute alterations of inflammation, infection, oxygenation, perfusion, acid/base balance, and hemostasis.

Identify priority information and discrepancies to include in documentation that reflects a continuum of quality improvement.

Identify priority nurse actions and assessments used to maintain person-centered care.

Recognize patient cues and provide rationale for nursing clinical decision making for expected and unexpected patient outcomes as it pertains to Pathopharmacology.

Utilize parameters to interpret patient responses to medications and determine dose adjustments per protocol.

Demonstrate priority nursing actions and assessments in health and illness.

Calculate multi-step medication calculations involving medications utilized for hemodynamic stability.

Identify measures to mitigate risk of harm and maintain patient safety in health and illness.

Model behaviors among peers that reflect professionalism, collaboration and teamwork within the classroom.
