Program Description
This is a certificate in institutional housekeeping, engineering, maintenance, security, and janitorial services in housing and homeless services, as well as commercial settings such as hotels, resorts, retail centers, residential apartment buildings, and other operations. Individuals completing this coursework will understand foundational concepts related to human services, preventive maintenance and security operations, the provision of safe and positive living environments, terminology, and operational best practices. Learners completing this certificate will be prepared for employment in supportive housing properties and residences, shelters, and a variety of commercial lodging establishments.
Learners completing this selection of coursework will be empathetic critical thinkers, comprehend the importance of low barrier and harm reduction housing programs as well as the lodging industry’s current role in providing such housing, and be prepared to welcome guests who have experienced differing levels of trauma. Learners will excel in the performance of culturally responsive customer service responsibilities, hospitality using trauma informed care practices, hard skills related to maintenance / engineering or institutional housekeeping, and best practices to collaboratively provide safe, dignified services to meet the unique needs of each guest.
