| EDUC 380 - Understanding Learning5 Credits The focus of this course is on how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas. Based on understanding how learning occurs-how learners construct knowledge, acquire skills, and develop disciplined thinking processes, participants will consider how to use instructional strategies that promote student learning. Participants will explore how to design and implement developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences, identify readiness for learning, and consider how development in one area (cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, physical) may affect performance in others. Students will recognize the importance of fostering social-emotional learning (SEL) for themselves and for students. (Course may incorporate OSPI module on SEL: http://www.k12.wa.us/StudentSupport/SEL/OnlineModule.aspx)
