ABE 2 - ESOL Literacy

11 Credits
Designed for adults who have little to no literacy in their native language and who have extremely limited proficiency in the English language. Integrates the instruction of listening, speaking, reading, writing and technology skills. ESOL 1 is equivalent to CASAS scores 183 and below.

  • Entrance assessment of existing skill level.
  • Introduction to and mastery of Level Pre-Literacy Exit criteria and SLOs through class assignments, small group work and lecture.

Student Learning Outcomes
ESOL Literacy  SL.1 
Ask/answer questions and converse with a partner with some hesitation and support using learned vocabulary, clarification language,  and comprehensible intonation, pronunciation, and word order.

ESOL Literacy S/L.2
Use simple words, phrases, and short sentences to talk about a familiar topic prepared in advance using notes or organizer with comprehensible pronunciation.

ESOL Literacy S/L.3 
Demonstrate ability to comprehend oral class content, follow simple instructions, complete tasks, and ask for clarification with assistance.

ESOL Literacy W.1
Print upper and lower case letters.  Write name, phone number, and dates. Find and copy other personal information.

ESOL Literacy W.2  
Copy and produce CVC words and vocabulary words studied in class. Copy simple sentences on the line, demonstrating understanding of letter, word, and sentence structures, including spaces between words.

ESOL Literacy R.1 
Recognize letters, words, and sentences; identify letter names and sounds and numbers 1-20.

ESOL Literacy  R.2  
Use visual cues and context to read and recognize learned vocabulary and sight words in sentences.

ESOL Literacy  R.3 
Decode common one-syllable words and read aloud using phonemic awareness.

ESOL Literacy  T.1
Complete basic tasks using a computer keyboard and mouse with assistance.
