EDUC 354 - Reading Methods

5 Credits


This course deepens candidates’ understanding of teaching reading by examining developmental frameworks and the interrelationships between reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students will explore metacognition, first and second language literacy acquisition, and meaning construction from diverse texts.

Topics include selecting appropriate assessment tools, understanding reading level variability within grades and individuals, and implementing targeted interventions for individuals and flexible groups. The curriculum introduces ELA frameworks and strategies while analyzing Washington’s Common Core State Standards to create appropriate, challenging learning targets and success criteria.

Emphasis is placed on developing strategy lessons addressing the core reading components: awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Reading Instruction

  • Discussion boards, essays, and short entries periodically to check for understanding and proficiency in candidates’ learning amongst the topics below: 
    • Select reading assessment tools to match instructional purposes
    • Understand variability in reading levels among same age/grade children, apply flexible interventions in reading groups. 
    • Incorporate methods that elicit student voice (e.g., including reflection related to learning targets, metacognitive strategies, and effective use of resources).
    • Common Core State Standards exposure for Washington State Standards.
    • Develop appropriate lesson plans and curriculum units that align instruction and assessment with rigorous learning objectives.

Student Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of English Language Arts fundamentals, inquiry methods, and reading processes while designing meaningful learning experiences that develop reading skills essential for student success across all content areas.

Apply knowledge of learner development to design and implement challenging, age-appropriate reading experiences using diverse teaching strategies and frameworks that amplify student voice while ensuring reading processes are accessible to all learners.

Implement culturally responsive practices that intellectually, socially, emotionally, and politically empower all students, particularly Multilingual Learners, to develop essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes across diverse learning environments including whole group, cooperative, independent, and individualized settings.

Design and implement varied assessment methods (formative and summative) that document, monitor, and support learner progress aligned with learning objectives and student needs using Universal Design for Learning principles.

Adapt assessments to make content accessible for Multilingual Learners while evaluating and supporting their English proficiency development.
