EDUC 346 - ELA Methods3 Credits This course explores language development across diverse contexts by examining Standard American English grammar through semantics, syntax, morphology, and phonology. Students will study first and second language acquisition principles and how linguistic patterns across cultures affect student expression.
The curriculum introduces ELA, writing, and reading strategies to effectively support Multilingual Learners, students with IEPs or 504 plans, and those experiencing trauma or behavioral challenges. Students will learn to create appropriate yet challenging learning targets and success criteria.
Participants will develop understanding of writing processes and teaching methodologies, creating lesson plans and curriculum units with aligned instruction and assessment. The course incorporates Washington’s Common Core State Standards to guide development of instructional strategies that elicit student voice while providing tiered support for all learners to achieve proficiency.

- Reading textbooks to guide learning to support the students learning outcomes throughout the quarter.
- Discussion boards, essays, and short entries to show understanding of learning periodically to check for understanding and proficiency.

- Develop lesson plans and curriculum units that align instruction and assessment with rigorous learning objectives.

Apply knowledge of learner development to design and implement challenging, age-appropriate learning experiences in ELA/writing, while utilizing diverse teaching strategies and frameworks that amplify student voice and ensuring content accessibility for all learners.
Implement culturally responsive practices that intellectually, socially, emotionally, and politically empower all students, particularly Multilingual Learners, to develop essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes across diverse learning environments including whole group, cooperative, independent, and individualized settings.
Design and implement varied assessment methods (formative and summative) that document, monitor, and support learner progress aligned with learning objectives and student needs using Universal Design for Learning principles. Adapt assessments to make content accessible for Multilingual Learners while evaluating and supporting their English proficiency development.
